Hamworthy Heating, a trusted British manufacturer and supplier of commercial heating and hot water products, has supplied its latest range of Modumax mk4 floor standing boilers to the University of Huddersfield, as part of the university’s ongoing investment in improving efficiency and sustainability across its campus.

The new boilers have been installed at two key locations, Queen Street and The Laura Annie Willson Building (formerly known as the Technology Building). With limited space and access at both sites, the university needed a solution that could efficiently deliver the required heating output while making best use of the existing plant room layouts.

The chosen system includes a two stack configuration with a total output of 294 kW for the Queen Street plantroom, together with a three stack of 762 kW serving the Laura Annie Willson building.

“The Laura Annie Willson plantroom is a great example of how mk4 boilers can deliver the required output, even in space restricted environments. By making full use of the available space, we were able to achieve a total output of 762 kW within a compact footprint, which is often difficult to achieve in commercial applications”, explains Bob Smith, Hamworthy Heating.

With access to both plant rooms restricted, the modular design of the mk4 boilers played a key role in this installation. Each unit was dismantled into individual sections, which were transported through the available access routes before being reassembled in position. The modules were then vertically stacked to make the most of the available plant room space. This allowed the boilers to be installed without the need for significant alterations to the plant rooms.

Available in five models with outputs from 97 to 254kW (50/30°C), mk4 boilers provide a 5:1 turndown ratio per module, low Class 6 NOx emissions and up to 95% gross seasonal efficiency. To assist facilities teams, mk4 boilers also feature a user-friendly full-colour touchscreen interface to simplify day-to-day operation and maintenance.

Commenting on the project, Luke Brearcliffe, Project Manager, Gasmech Services Limited explains,

“We’ve worked with the Hamworthy team for many years, so when it came to replacing our existing boilers, we were confident they would recommend the right solution for our site. The new boilers have performed really well since installation, particularly over the winter when they handled very cold conditions without any issues. We’ve already noticed improvements in day-to-day operation, and the team has been responsive throughout, answering questions quickly and making regular site visits to ensure everything continues to run as expected. From installation through to commissioning, the project was well organised and delivered professionally, with minimal disruption to our day-to-day operations.”

Following the successful installation, the university now benefits from an efficient heating system that supports its long-term sustainability objectives.
