RIBA Competitions are delighted to announce that six teams have now been selected to take part in the design stage of an invited competition to design a new world class, luxury hotel on the site of the former Worsley New Hall in Greater Manchester.

Peter Nears, Strategic Planning Director for Peel Holdings, the client for the competition said:  “The quality of all the entrants was high, making this a difficult choice.  We were, in particular, pleased to see the careful consideration of the landscape characteristics of the site displayed by the shortlisted practices.

The archaeological dig currently being carried out by Salford University has revealed the significant remains of the basement to the New Hall and I am sure this will inspire them – we look forward to the presentation of the final schemes in September.”

The shortlisted teams (in alphabetical order) are:

Allies & Morrison

Edward Cullinan Architects

Feilden Clegg Bradley

Henning Larsen Architects

Hopkins

Ian Simpson Architects

David Morley, RIBA Architectural Adviser said:  “The assessment panel were delighted at the level of interest shown in this design competition by some of Europe's most talented architectural practices. The eventual shortlist included those who demonstrated a real passion to work with Peel Developments and a particular sensitivity to this amazing opportunity to create a world class contemporary hotel within the south facing terraced landscape of a former historic country mansion.”

The teams will be given until August to work on their design submissions with an exhibition of the shortlisted designs to be held in the Egg space at the University of Salford, MediaCity during September.
