ISG has successfully handed over the first phase of a £1.7 million refurbishment project for leisure operator Fusion Lifestyle, to remodel and enhance facilities at the Wavelengths Leisure Centre in Lewisham, South London.

A new gym opened to customers in January following an intensive fast-track programme to relocate and extend the centre’s existing facilities. Now situated at ground floor level, the spacious and light 80 station gym incorporates a range of state-of-the-art cardiovascular and resistance equipment as well as a functional area for warming up, stretching and free weights.

Also newly opened is a group exercise studio and indoor cycle studio, which will shortly be joined by a café. These newly created areas will be soon supported by impressive new dry changing facilities, which include a new health suite with sauna and steam room.

The complex, 25-week upgrade and remodelling scheme involves numerous phased completions to enable the leisure centre to remain open to the public throughout the duration of the works. Further phases of work include the creation of a new children’s soft play zone and a further group exercise studio.

As part of the centre’s redevelopment, ISG will also carry out enhancements to the centre’s leisure pool, refurbishing the existing flumes and upgrading the wet change facility. The reception area and remaining changing and toilet facilities will also be upgraded and refreshed during the project.

ISG’s Ian Gifford – managing director – South East, commented: “This is an extremely complex programme that aims to maximise the useable space within the existing leisure centre, enhancing and adding new facilities, without increasing the building’s footprint. Maintaining continuity of operations is an essential element of the scheme as is our ability to work effectively within a busy live environment.

“Undoubtedly, our track record of working across highly challenging, phased projects proved instrumental in winning this project and we are confident that once completed, the revitalised Wavelengths Leisure Centre will continue to play an important role within the local community.”
