The Hydro - designed by Architects Foster and Partners joins the Clyde Auditorium on the northern edge of the River Clyde to create a new entertainment venue within the redevelopment of Glasgow’s former docks.
Scotbark was contracted to install Filtrexx Soxx on the Hydro’s Green Roof. This application was chosen as a solution to retaining growing media on steep angles encountered within the unique design of the roof, and also to protect against wind blow of loose material.
Filtrexx Soxx is a patented mesh containment system which can be used with many bespoke compost and growing media substrates to provide a green, low impact solution to engineering problems.
Access was restricted due to the boundary of the site and other construction works being carried out at the same time so Scotbark’s Express Blower Trucks were used to remove the need to stockpile material on an already congested site and eliminate the need for a crane to lift bags up to roof. The blower trucks are equipped with flexible pipes which enable them to fill sox in continuous length in- situ without the use of any other heavy plant equipment. Materials were stockpiled at Scotbark’s Glasgow depot and the Blower trucks were reloaded off site.
Eighteen thousand Linear Metres of Filtrexx Soxx filled with 1200m3 of substrate to a finished depth of 300mm were successfully installed on schedule with no impact on the rest of the site works, post installation the contractor added irrigation pipe work and planted the soxx with shrubbs. The roof height ranged from 8-15m from ground level and sections ranged from 15-25m.
