Newhey Carpets, a specialist designer and leading British manufacturer of innovative, high performance and sustainable commercial carpets recently supplied over 1500 square metres of luxurious Colortec+ carpet for IHG-owned Hotel Indigo located on one of the oldest streets in the historic city of York.

Following the completion of the brand new hotel by Splendid Hospitality Group and interior design firm Matthews Mee, Hotel Indigo recently opened its doors on Walmgate in July. The 101 room hotel has been designed to play homage to the history of the city, from its love of all things chocolate to its Roman heritage.

Newhey’s design team collaborated with Rob Matthews at Matthews Mee to design and manufacture 5 individual rugs, 2 for public areas and 3 for guestrooms.  All rugs were finished with a blind hem to give a clean and contemporary edge.  The corridors and winding staircase featured a bold geometric pattern incorporating a simple lined border helping to bring a historic feel to the hotel with a modern geometric twist.

Rob Matthews commented: “Matthews Mee worked up this new design direction based on a neighbourhood inspired story for Splendid Hospitality & IHG at Hotel Indigo Walmgate York which draws on elements form the local industrial, social & architectural history in York.

"Bespoke bedroom rugs where commissioned from Newhey carpets & reflect the Georgian decorated encaustic tiled floor designs seen in many of the grand town houses through out the city. A modern twist was added by mixing up the geometric designs to create an informal patchwork design throughout the corridors. Public areas attracted a similar design rationale with a brief to Newhey to create a modern take in order to bring the design bang up to date based on several geometric designs to create zones in the public food & beverage areas.”

The bespoke carpets and rugs were created using Newhey’s innovative Colortec+ technology. The product is tufted using computer yarn placement technology, a high-tech innovation providing a durable product to deal with high footfall. This carpet construction also allowed for a cost effective solution.

With over 40 years of technical excellence and constantly pushing the boundaries of innovation in sustainability, Newhey Carpets has recently developed a revolutionary carpet secondary backing system, ‘evobac’.

Newhey’s ‘evobac’ features on every design. Evobac is made using 100% recycled plastic bottles and offers a sustainable option for the hotel, without decreasing the luxury feel of the carpet. This meant that as well as high quality bespoke designs, Newhey was able to offer a sustainable, high performance luxury option. The geometric designs may pay homage to the city’s ancient past but the technology used to produce the carpet definitely doesn’t.

In recent months this groundbreaking innovation has been used in a number of high profile hotels such as The Park Inn Radisson at Heathrow, Dorsett Shepherds Bush in London, Tilal Liwa Hotel in Abu Dhabi and Double Tree by Hilton in Edinburgh and most recently in Manchester’s newest 5* Hotel, Hotel Gotham.
