Marley’s Duo Edgemere tiles have been used to give a slate like finish on an award winning roofing project for ten prestigious new build homes in the highly desirable Cults area of Aberdeen.
The Cala Homes development at Hayfield Grange includes ten detached luxury properties finished with a distinctive exterior.
After appointing Marley Contract Services to complete the roofing contract, Cala Homes specified Marley's Duo Edgemere tiles in smooth grey to complement the stone finish of the homes. Marley’s concrete plain tiles were also used around the dormer windows on the luxury homes.
The high standard of work on the project resulted in Marley Contract Services winning the 2013 National Federation of Roofing Contractors (NFRC) Scottish Contractor of the Year award. Graham Ross from Marley Contract Services, explains: “The Hayfield Grange development is in a picturesque setting and we needed to use a roof tile that both complemented the contemporary style of the homes and blended in with the local surroundings. The Marley Duo Edgemere tile gives the properties a premium slate like finish more cost effectively and is quicker and easier to install.”
Marley's Edgemere is a range of large format concrete interlocking tiles with a thin leading edge providing a number of slate like appearances at a more attractive price. The Duo Edgemere gives the appearance of a smaller format slate with a mock bond down the centre of the tile combined with a broken bond laying technique. Therefore it gives the same visual impact as a small format slate with the ease of installation provided by standard interlocking tiles.
Gavin White, marketing product manager at Marley, comments: “We are seeing increasing demand for all of our Edgemere tiles across the whole housing sector as they offer not only a cost effective alternative to natural slate but also an affordable upgrade to standard interlocking tiles. Duo Edgemere in particular is proving popular because it gives a small format slate finish but is quicker to install, helping to save time and cost on roofing programmes.
“The Hayfield Grange properties are priced up to £1.175 million and have a very high internal specification. The Duo Edgemere tiles help replicate this luxury specification on the exterior at a lower cost than natural slate, yet with the same aesthetic benefits, helping the properties to combine the feeling of contemporary living with craftsmanship and quality.”
With only 9.7 tiles per square metre, Edgemere is a single lap solution that is quicker and easier to install than natural slate and 40% thinner than standard concrete interlocking tiles. With the ability to perform at pitches as low as 17.5°, Edgemere has the versatility to be used on a wide range of roof types and is now available in three variants, standard, riven and duo.
Edgemere tiles also offer impressive environmental credentials. Independent carbon certification, the ability to achieve an A+ rating in the BRE’s Green Guide to Specification and certification to the BES 6001 standard for Responsible Sourcing, means they can help to achieve extra credits under BREEAM and the Code for Sustainable Homes.
