Solid Wood Solutions is now in its fourth year and spaces for this year’s event are in high demand. The combined conference and exhibition will be held at the Inmarsat Conference Centre in London on 16 September 2015. Solid Wood Solutions will be exploring and demonstrating the many benefits that timber technology is able to bring to construction projects across a range of different sectors.

With timber towers sprouting up across the world there is a noticeable buzz within the industry about the use of cross laminated timber (CLT) in medium rise residential buildings. Solid Wood Solutions will be hosting some of the industry professionals at the heart of these record breaking buildings, who will be sharing their knowledge through technical presentations throughout the day. This event is the ideal opportunity for construction professionals to learn directly from industry pioneers and network with engineered timber specialists.

Presentations covering the residential sector at Solid Wood Solutions include:

“More than Structure - Design Led Solutions in Solid Timber” presented by Liam Dewar - Eurban

Having introduced CLT to the country over 10 years ago, Eurban have been instrumental in the development of the CLT market in the UK. As a company, they continue to promote the virtues of a design-led approach to this form of construction and demonstrate the advantages of employing a solid timber specialist from the outset of a project. This presentation will detail Eurban’s involvement in the RIBA Award winning Architecture Archive. Projects include the UK’s first ‘uninsulated’ solid timber building, Cobalt Place, which is also the title of the first solid timber residential development to create over 100 units. Also featured will be the RIBA Award winning, Arcadia Nursery - an exemplar multi-functional timber design solution.

“17-21 Wenlock Road - Building a 10 Storey CLT/Hybrid structure in London,” presented by Nick Milestone - B & K Structures, Alex Smith - Hawkins/Brown & Clive Fussell - Engenuiti

Banyan Wharf, Wenlock Road is an outstanding example of how the use of CLT in medium rise buildings is being taken to new heights. This ten storey Regal Homes development has taken the title of the tallest CLT residential building in Europe. Using timber technology as the core structural component was the preferred option for the build due to Hackney’s commitment to creating more sustainable buildings. CLT wall and floor panels up to 200mm thick and weighing up to 4 tonnes, were delivered to the site with all openings pre-cut, allowing them to be lifted straight into position, which was a huge advantage when working on such a restricted site.

“Timber systems in medium rise housing application” presented by Andrew Waugh - Waugh Thistleton Architects

The advantages of timber systems are becoming increasingly apparent in medium rise residential developments. There are numerous benefits to using engineered timber such as cross laminated timber in the construction process. These range from reduced loading on foundations and infrastructure services, to impressive thermal, acoustic and airtightness performance over more traditional materials, but most importantly, a CLT construction solution provides cost and programme certainty. The key to the success of CLT in medium rise developments is in the strength to weight ratio of the engineered timber that allows it to have multi-storey capability, reaching up to 10 storeys already constructed in the UK and a structural capacity beyond this.
