A 195-year-old Georgian residence in County Down has been given a comprehensive restoration using paint and treatment products from Johnstone’s Trade.

Clanmurry House in Dromore, which operates as a bed and breakfast, required a refurbishment that would be sensitive to the building’s heritage, and also provide the property with the necessary protection against the elements.

Decorating firm David Rodgers & Son, established in 1932, came recommended for the project following their refurbishment of a nearby church, and they used Johnstone’s Sterilisation Wash to treat and prepare the walls, chimneys and sills, providing them with protection against mould, fungal and algal growth prior to painting.

The property was then painted a pastel rose colour, using two coats of Johnstone’s Pliolite Based Masonry Finish, which provides a matt finish of the highest quality and is highly effective on the type of cement render finish found at Clanmurry House.

The weather conditions at the property were a key consideration throughout the refurbishment works, and David Rodgers & Son made the wise decision to begin the project in May, rather than October as originally proposed. This allowed for fewer interruptions in the decorating process, and the team of three decorators were able to take full advantage of the paint’s excellent adhesion to previously painted surfaces.

David Rodgers, owner of David Rodgers and Son decorators, said: “The quality of Johnstone’s Pliolite Based Masonry Finish was important for two main reasons. Firstly, the quick drying time - showerproof in less than 20 minutes - and, secondly, the covering capacity over the existing painted surfaces.

“This was a challenging but interesting project, which has lead to further similar opportunities for our company within Northern Ireland. As a small, family-run business, we are immensely proud to be associated with the brand, and having products we can trust is key to our continued success.

“When purchasing the products from Johnstone’s, we see its slogan - ‘Paint To Be Proud Of’ – and we agree 100 per cent.”
