Longdens’ traditional manufacturing skills and heritage-project experience proved vital when it supplied 431 bespoke panelled solid timber doorsets to one of Scotland’s most prestigious redevelopments.

The Sheffield-based company was tasked with creating a doorset fit for the Hamilton Grand, a development of apartments in an impressive 19th century building perched on the edge of St Andrews’ golf course.

With just a photo of an old door to work from Longden constructed a doorset that features original detailing and is sympathetic to the building’s history, as well as being attractive to potential buyers and compliant with modern Building Regulations.

Nigel Greyson of Longden said: “It was a challenge but our skilled staff are used to working from photos. We had to replicate mirrors, circular beads and square frames to make sure the panelled doorsets matched the picture, which is where our experience of handcrafting bespoke solutions really came into play. In the end the team on the shop created something that looks stunning.”

During the specification stage Longdens’ joinery experts worked closely with the architects and contractors – Unwin Jones Partnership and ISG Construction Limited  – sharing drawings and designs before manufacturing began to ensure the doorsets met all the expectations of the developers.

Panelled door styles supplied to the Hamilton Grand included the Sheraton flat panel which were supplied in Dorchester two panel, Bath three panel and Sussex four panel designs. The Sheraton flat panel is particularly suited to projects such as this, since it takes a classic aesthetic and cleverly adapts it for a contemporary setting.

Longdens’ ability to balance the need to preserve or replicate features of architectural significance with compliance requirements for doors, frames, architraves, reveal panelling and other similar elements is one it has honed during more than 175 years in the industry. And the panelled doorsets supplied to the Hamilton Grand boast fire ratings of up to FD60 and acoustic ratings of up to 38Rwdb.

All Longdens’ solid timber panelled doors are made using the time-honoured joinery skills that have been passed down through the generations at its factory and are, said Nigel Greyson, “a guarantee of high quality”.
