Leading builder’s merchant Travis Perkins has provided support to a state-of-the-art self build project completed by an ex-marine who sustained life-changing injuries in Afghanistan.

In 2010, Captain Jon White lost three limbs whilst on tour making his existing home difficult to navigate and unsuitable for his requirements. This led Jon to embark on a journey to build a cutting-edge three storey home which would provide an improved level of independence and quality of life for his family. The uniqueness and complexity of the design was such that the project was featured on Channel Four’s Grand Designs.

With no prior experience of project management, Jon contacted his local Travis Perkins branch in Tiverton for advice and to tap into its knowledge of building materials. The builder’s merchant contacted a host of manufacturers and suppliers who, inspired by Jon’s story, supplied a vast range of products to aid the construction of the new property free of charge. Travis Perkins also provided contact details for skilled and reliable labour within the local area.

Paul Middleton, Travis Perkins Tiverton Branch Manager, said: “As soon as we heard about Jon’s story we were keen to provide a helping hand wherever we could.  Undertaking a self-build project isn’t easy, but we were able to guide Jon through the process by utilising the expert knowledge and support on hand through our branch staff as well as a vast array of contacts within the industry. Jon has been able to build an incredible property which he and his family can enjoy for many years to come.”

Jon White, added: “I established a great work relationship with the team at Travis Perkins; this played a vital role in the success of the project.  It gave me easy access to an extensive range of products as well as skilled local builders and subcontractors. I was fortunate to find a builder’s merchant who would go above and beyond just delivering the product itself.”
