A project to create a striking new domestic dwelling in London has highlighted the creative possibilities offered by the Sto range of external wall insulation systems.
Located in Plaistow, Salmen House has been designed to add a fresh new dimension to the existing backdrop of traditional properties.
Sto supplied an integrated package of products for the project, including StoTherm Classic K external wall insulation, including Sto Armat Classic reinforcing mortar and StoSilco façade render.
“We specified the Sto system for a number of reasons,” explains Hugh McEwen of the project architects, Office S&M. “We were looking for a high-quality system that would provide a U-Value of 0.13 W/m2K and the required level of thermal insulation, but which would also allow us to create a dramatic exterior finish for the property. The Sto system was robust and durable, and it also offered us an enormous range of colours and finishes to choose from.”
The StoTherm Classic K system features Sto-EPS board which was used to create a 200mm-thick layer of insulation around the property. “This was a vital consideration, and it has allowed us to produce a property which has an estimated heating bill of just £300 per year,” adds Hugh.
The EPS boards were installed using Sto-Turbofix, a single-component adhesive foam which allows for rapid and accurate application. A layer of StoArmat Classic cement-free reinforcing mortar was then applied to protect the insulation boards, together with a coat of StoSilco façade render, with a 6.0 grain size to produce a rugged and textured finish.
“The choice of render and final surface coat were also particularly important,” adds Hugh. “We were looking to create a property with a contemporary appearance that broke away from the typical biscuit-brickwork which is common in that area, and we also wanted to reflect the reddish hues and colours of surrounding properties.”
“With the standard Sto range we were almost spoilt for choice when it came to selecting a final colour, and Sto worked very closely with us, supplying many sample panels, and helping us arrive at the final specification.
“With the StoSilco render we were able to achieve a very striking stippled finish, and the final salmon pink worked perfectly with the lush green used on other areas of the property. Together they have helped create a feeling of greater volume on a reasonably small-sized plot. The StoSilco render also has excellent water-repellent characteristics and is resistant to aggressive environments, so the property should retain its good looks for many years.”
The property was developed by My Property & Home, and the Sto system was installed by Novo Facades. Shortlisted for a 2018 AJ Small Projects Award it features four-metre tall bedrooms, exposed beam ceilings and a triple-height staircase.
