The Wales Air Ambulance have a new headquarters based in Llanelli the brand new purpose built office aims to bring the charity and the airbase together working towards a common goal. Local aluminium fabricators and installers Atcost Windows won the contract to supply and fit all the glazing products throughout the building using Kestrel Aluminium Systems as their preferred supplier.

The Challenge

A bold design had been chosen for the new headquarters and Atcost Windows were challenged to supply a glazing system that, was not only thermally efficient but could also be specified in colour and design options. To suit the design of the building Atcost Windows turned to trusted supplier Kestrel Aluminium Systems for their technical knowledge and quality products.

The Solution

The Kestrel Aluminium Systems’ estimating department ran the quote through the in-house estimating software to determine the best specification for the job in hand. The outcome was to use Curtain Walling, the 60mm Window System, Thermal Framing and the Thermal Commercial Door for the project to meet the required criteria.

The Kestrel Curtain Walling system allows screens of up to 20m to be built on site and easily installed. Powder coated grey, both the 100mm and 125mm Curtain Walling, profiles were used to create the impressive frontage on the purpose built headquarters and to glaze the common areas and meeting rooms maximising the flow of natural light into the building.

To ensure the building was going to be thermally efficient, Atcost Windows installed; the Kestrel 60mm Window, Thermal Framing and Thermal Commercial Door systems. Due to the Air Ambulance headquarters being a public building it was of paramount important that the products installed were Document L compliant. Utilising the thermal ramp threshold on the entrance doors ensured the doors are DDA compliant as well thermally efficient. The Kestrel Thermal Commercial Door has been rigorously tested to meet PAS 24 security standards and achieves U-Values of 1.8WmK

Opening vents were also specified for the offices and Atcost opted to install the Kestrel 60mm Window Suite. Used throughout, the window suite offers commonality of design with the door and framing system utilising the same bead to achieve a consistent overall design. Installed with restrictor hinges to comply with building regulations and achieve U-Values of 1.6WmK

The Benefits

Kestrel Aluminium Systems offers technical support to customers during all aspects of a project and Atcost Windows utilised this service during this impressive build. The material quotes were run through the in house estimating department, and onsite support was provided to ensure the fabrication and smooth installation of the Curtain Walling frames and the Thermal Commercial Doors was achieved.

Area Sales Manager John Treagust met Jonathan and Gareth from Atcost on site during the installation process “We enjoy seeing our customers working on projects of this scale where a mix of the Kestrel product range is utilised and we are pleased that Atcost Windows felt they could rely on us to offer a suitable product and continued support throughout the life of the project.”
