Marley's Edgemere tiles have been specified on an award-winning £15 million social housing development that has transformed a derelict site on the edge of Oldham’s town Centre.

The St Mary’s housing development, delivered by Contour Homes (part of the Symphony Housing Group) and Oldham Council, has been built on a site that had been empty for more than a decade following the demolition of flats.

The new development includes 41 shared ownership and 52 social rent properties from two to five bedrooms, designed by local architects Nicol Thomas.

Nicol Thomas chose Marley's Edgemere tiles for aesthetic reasons, as they give a sleek slate like effect to complement the distinctive design of the properties. With four of the properties being built to the Code for Sustainable Homes level 6, the environmental credentials of the Edgemere tile helped the developers to achieve extra credits for materials.

Gavin White, marketing project manager at Marley, comments: “Our Edgemere tiles can help to achieve extra credits under the Code for Sustainable Homes and BREEAM because not only can they achieve an A+ rating in the BRE Green Guide, but they are also accredited to the BES 6001 Responsible Sourcing standard.”

The St Mary’s Housing Development was completed in 2013 and won the Royal Town Planning Institute North West award for planning achievement.

Gavin White continues: “Responsible sourcing is becoming more widely adopted by clients, particularly in the public sector and this is one of the reasons we are seeing increasing demand for our Edgemere tiles, as well the fact they offer a cost effective solution compared to natural slate and are an affordable upgrade from a standard interlocking tile. We are delighted the tiles have been used on such an exemplar scheme, as the St Mary’s development which is a flagship project that demonstrates how high quality architecture, environmental sustainability and affordable housing can transform derelict parts of towns in the UK.”

Marley’s Edgemere tiles are large format concrete interlocking tiles with a thin leading edge for a slate like appearance at a more attractive price. With only 9.7 tiles per square metre, Edgemere is a single lap solution that is quicker and easier to install than natural slate and 40% thinner than standard concrete interlocking tiles. With the ability to perform at pitches as low as 17.5°, Edgemere has the versatility to be used on a wide range of roof types and is now available in three variants, standard, riven and duo.omeH
