West Midlands construction company Anglo Holt has been appointed as the main contractor for a waste recycling plant in Daventry.
The facility, built on behalf of Earthworm PLC, will be a new departure for the West Bromwich-based company. Due to be completed in September 2012, the project has an estimated construction value of £3.1 million.
The plant will handle approximately 145,000 tonnes of food and green waste every year, which will be supplied through waste collection agencies in the Daventry and Nuneaton areas.
The facility will comprise a reception hall with a volume of 6,060m3 where waste is received and pre-processed prior to transfer into the composters, 10 vertical composting vessels, and a maturation hall containing six aeration bays that are each capable of holding approximately 480m3 of maturing compost.
Each bay will have a ducted air system to allow air to be forced through the material to accelerate the maturation process and to remove the need for the regular manual turning that would otherwise be necessary at this stage of the process.
Both the reception building and the maturation hall are fully enclosed and air inside the buildings is maintained at negative pressure to minimise external odours.
A below ground drainage system will be installed to contain the water run-off from the composting process.
Anglo Holt will carry out all construction work while VCU Europa Limited will install the 10 vertical composters.
Anglo Holt managing director Andy Elwell said: “This is a unique project for Anglo Holt as we haven’t built a waste recycling plant before. However, we have all the expertise needed for this project and relish the opportunity to work on different types of projects. We look forward to working with VCU Europa to complete this facility in Daventry.”
