TRILUX has been specified by Kirklees Council in West Yorkshire to upgrade the lighting in one of its largest car parks Huddersfield Market Hall, in central Huddersfield.

The resulting lighting scheme has seen the existing inefficient sodium lamps replaced with over 200 Nextrema LED luminaires, which have been selected to improve lighting levels and aid safety and security, as well as reduce maintenance costs and provide significant energy savings.

Completed in March 2013, the lighting upgrade at Huddersfield Market Hall car park was part of a programme of works aimed at reducing the Council’s energy bill and carbon footprint. In line with this, Kirklees Council identified a number of its car parks as areas where a large impact could be made – with Huddersfield Market Hall featuring top of that list, as at the time, it was proving expensive to maintain.

As such, Kirklees Council’s in-house design team worked closely with TRILUX to deliver a lighting design that would achieve a series of challenges; exceptionally high-energy efficiency, uniformity for the increased feeling of security and improved light levels for enhanced driver perception.

Furthermore, due to the nature of the environment it was vital that the lighting fixtures had a robust, impact-resistant design and anti-vibration components that illuminate to full output immediately.

Nextrema LED luminaires from TRILUX were selected as they have been developed specifically for extreme operating environments such as car parks. Thanks to modern LED technology, the weatherproof luminaire is extremely cost effective and environmentally friendly with a service life in excess of 50,000 hours. Plus, the Nextrema LED luminaire delivers improved colour rendering and does not have a colour shift during its life.

“Huddersfield Market Hall car park became a key area of focus for Kirklees Council as it has been in need of a lighting upgrade for some time,” commented Michael Sanderson from Kirklees Council’s Physical Resources & Procurement directorate. “The outdated sodium lighting was not meeting current regulations so after investigating several potential replacements, undertaking performance comparisons and obtaining a number of samples, we opted to go with the Nextrema LED luminaire. So far we have been extremely impressed with the product’s build quality and standards in terms of price and performance.”

Furthermore, additional savings will be enjoyed as time switches were also installed, which will mean that the lighting in the car park is switched off between 0:00 and 6:00,whereas in the past the lights were switched on 24 hours per day, seven days per week.

In addion, by switching from 100W sodium lamps, which used a total of 123 watts to TRILUX’s Nextrema LED luminaires, which reduced this figure to 55 watts – Kirklees Council will reduce its energy use, lower carbon emissions and in addition – benefit from a financial saving of over £10,000 per annum.

TRILUX provides technical luminaires for interior and exterior spaces. More than just a supplier, the company prides itself on its position as a partner offering architects, engineers and specifiers products that meet a range of demands, but always ensuring one feature remains the same: attention to detail.
