In a prominent recognition of its sustainability achievements, Carillion Facilities Management has been awarded the Adaption to Climate Change prize at the North West Public Health Awards, for its work to create positive, healthy environments in Piccadilly, Manchester.
The commercial property and facilities management company is part of Carillion plc, one of the UK’s largest integrated support services companies.
As part of its portfolio it manages a number of properties in central Manchester – including Piccadilly Place, home to NHS North West.
The award follows a collaborative programme of social and environmental initiatives designed to improve the experience of communities that work and live near Piccadilly Place. A number of practical sustainability measures have been implemented at the site to reduce carbon emissions, energy consumption and water use – all of which have been independently verified by leading environmental assessor, BREEAM.
Since starting the programme, the team has reduced CO2 emissions by 250 tonnes and water consumption by 200,000 litres annually. This has resulted in annual savings of approximately £30,000, which are passed straight back to the tenants in the building.
Phil Murphy, Compliance and Sustainability Manager at Carillion, said: “Our team at the Piccadilly Estate in Manchester, and the tenants in the buildings, have shown an admirable determination and commitment to every sustainability target we’ve set.
“In addition to the environmental measures installed at the site, the team has organised several interactive events in the building’s shared public space, all designed to engage with the local community on health issues. These have included an Olympic Party, various sporting opportunities, chair massages, meditation tasters, health checks and even a pedal-powered smoothie maker.”
Carillion’s Facilities Manager at the Piccadilly Estate, Tim White, commented: “The goal has always been to create a healthy workplace, where wellbeing can be encouraged and we’ve taken a holistic approach that embraces the community in order to achieve that.”

We have created an interactive calendar of events taking place in our public space, enabling our tenants to engage and creating a real sense of community at the scheme.
