City College Plymouth’s latest employer endorser is giving College construction students real-life work experience on a huge project in the city.
Apollo, one of the country’s biggest property services groups, is currently engaged in a five year social housing refurbishment programme in Plymouth, and is offering City College Plymouth students the chance to gain work experience during this time.
Students who are studying painting and decorating, plastering, carpentry and plumbing will all be given the opportunity to work with Apollo alongside local tradespeople, which will give them a valuable insight into the world of construction work.
Sharron Robbie, Corporate Relations Manager at City College Plymouth, said: “The opportunity for our construction students to gain real-hands on experience is invaluable. The College’s Employer Endorsement Scheme enables students to gain access to a range of workplace focused activity, all of which is designed to ensure they gain the employability skills so desired by employers.
“The College has had to put all participants through asbestos awareness training and site safety training to enable them to work on the project, which will stand them in good stead when they leave us and progress into employment!”
Elaine Jones, Resident Liaison/Community Investment Manager for Apollo, said “Apollo is thrilled to be able to offer these work placements to the students of City College Plymouth. We know that these real life work experience opportunities will be a huge help to these students when they are applying for jobs in the future. It is very important to Apollo that we leave a lasting benefit for communities in the areas where we work, and a scheme like this is one way in which we can ensure we do this.”
The College’s Employer Endorsement Scheme is unique as it builds positive, collaborative relationships with local and national employers, whilst giving its students enhanced work placement opportunities and an insight into industry specific areas of work. To-date, 39 regional and national employers have signed-up to the scheme and are involved through course development, work experience opportunities, delivering guest lectures to students or providing Apprenticeship programmes. To find out more about the scheme, call the College on 01752 305300.
