CIC has joined forces with the Green Construction Board, led jointly by Government and industry, and Green Property Alliance partners to conduct a major review of the effectiveness of energy and carbon policies relevant to non-domestic property in the UK.
Buildings remain the single largest contributor to carbon emissions, with energy use in non-domestic buildings accounting for 17 per cent of the total UK carbon footprint.
The Government is legally committed to an 80 per cent reduction in emissions by 2050 and has already introduced a range of energy and carbon focused policies and instruments to support this target.
However, in its recently published 2013 Progress Report to Parliament, the Committee on Climate Change has noted that energy and carbon performance in the commercial property sector has been static in recent years, and urged the completion of a comprehensive assessment of non-residential low-carbon policies to ensure they are working effectively.
In a major example of cross-industry and Government collaboration, this jointly supported independent research project is focusing on exactly this issue and has the objective of positively informing future regulatory and fiscal policy in the UK.
As part of the study, a major survey is being undertaken of businesses across the full spectrum of property interests.
CIC urges all those in the industry to take the opportunity to bring their insight to this important study by taking a few moments to complete the survey. It will be live until August 30 2013.
