The Corrosion Prevention Association (CPA) is holding the latest event in its popular series of Corrosion Prevention Seminars at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff on 20 September 2012.
The free of charge seminar, Protecting our Assets - How to stop Corrosion, will provide an introduction to the corrosion process, explaining why it occurs and highlighting its devastating impact on buildings and infrastructure.
Leading industry experts will provide an insight into the repair techniques available for different types of structure and will be on hand throughout the morning event to answer delegates’ questions and provide specialist advice.
Dr Chris Atkins of Mott MacDonald, current Chairman of the Association, will open the event with a brief insight into the causes of corrosion and cost effective methods of repair, while Dr George Sergei of Vector Corrosion Technologies will consider corrosion protection for reinforced concrete highway structures. The use of electrochemical repair techniques on highway structures and car parks will be described, as well as the CPA's work in the development of corrosion prevention standards.
Dr John Broomfield, a renowned expert in the field of corrosion prevention, and author of the bestselling book, Corrosion of Steel in Concrete: Understanding, Investigation and Repair , will review the corrosion problems associated with the early 20th century steel-framed buildings that dominate many of our city centres. He will discuss repair options, focusing mainly on the benefits of applying impressed current cathodic protection.
The morning event will be brought to a close by Jim Preston of Corrosion Prevention Ltd, who will provide an interesting overview of the corrosion prevention methods available for protecting marine structures. Using project histories from around the UK coast he will focus on cathodic protection, explaining the advantages of both impressed current and galvanic anodes.
The event, which starts at 9.30am, is followed by a buffet lunch, giving delegates an opportunity to network with other construction professionals and discuss their corrosion problems with the CPA’s technical specialists. Delegates will also be able to take a tour of this world class stadium.
