Dig the City Manchester 2012 opens to the public

Dig the City, Manchester’s first urban garden and flower festival, has been officially launched at Manchester Cathedral.

The Right Reverend Nigel McCulloch, Lord Bishop of Manchester and The Worshipful, The Lord Mayor of Manchester, Councillor Elaine Boyes and The Very Reverend Rogers Govender, Dean of Manchester will open the event, which is the first of its kind in the UK.  The event opens to the general public on Tuesday 24th July but organisers are inviting the media, partners and sponsors to an exclusive preview evening to view the flowers and gardens.

Dig the City will feature over 10 different areas, including a huge flower festival at Manchester Cathedral and activity within Manchester Arndale, the newly rebranded Corn Exchange and the newly National Football Museum.  The public areas including Exchange Square, Cathedral Gardens and the recently pedestrianised Victoria Street will be transformed into a city centre garden.  The majority of it is free to see and take part, making it an ideal family day out.

Dig the City Manchester 2012 is a partnership of key public and private sector organisations within the city including Manchester Cathedral, Manchester City Council and Nikal Property Development and is the first of an annual event that is set to grow throughout the city centre year on year.

Organisers are working closely with city centre bodies, such as Manchester City Council and Cityco, and the aim is for the event to become a week celebration of year round activity to increase green space in the city centre, and develop legacy areas.

Dig the City at Manchester Cathedral will be a spectacle of flowers. The Cathedral will be filled with over 30,000 stunning cut flowers, designed by award winning flower arrangers. The theme will be a celebration of music and the Diamond Jubilee, and will include displays depicting classical and modern music.

Launch event:

Time : 6pm

Date : 23rd July 2012

Location : Manchester Cathedral
