Food waste disposal the Eco way

Food waste is one of the largest proportions of household waste and because of its nature it is the most difficult to manage.

This is why food waste disposers are fast becoming popular kitchen appliances and are seeing increased specification in new build schemes.

Covered by a four year warranty, EcoSink from EcoService (UK) Ltd comes in a range of five types with different power output motors, most with fully insulated sound shells and air switches for particularly quiet operation. They are ideal for new build property, refurbishing a kitchen, or replacing old food waste disposers. They are also designed for use in light commercial settings such as pubs, cafes, small restaurants and offices.

EcoSink is very much a tried and trusted product.  Thousands of units have now been sold in the UK and Europe over the last three years.  EcoSink has been designed and manufactured using the latest technology and incorporates a patented turntable inside.  They are reliable, high quality units made by a specialist electric motor company in Hong Kong.

Many food waste disposers use blades, which can be dangerous and can tangle food waste that they should be shredding.  EcoSink however is bladeless where the unit spins the waste food at over 5000rpm, including chicken and fish bones, into a puree using centrifugal force.  The tiny particles are virtually liquefied and washed down the drain into the waste water system.

So with products such as EcoSink it is more environmentally friendly to put food waste through a waste disposer unit down the drain where it goes to a sewage plant.  From there food waste such as old vegetable peelings, banana skins and filtered coffee grounds can be potentially used to create energy.  After all, 75% of food waste is water so it makes sense to flush it down the sink.

We are all encouraged to recycle our domestic waste but if food products are sent to landfill they generate harmful methane, considered to be 25 times worse than the effects of CO2 on global warming.  The ideal answer is home composting but not everyone is geared up for this and neither is it appropriate for those who live in apartments or for small businesses.

Food waste disposal units are thus an ideal solution for removing waste food at source and also it saves councils the costly separate food waste collection by trucks.

Indeed, a policy statement by the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM) concluded that food waste disposers are useful for separating kitchen food waste at source, and present cost savings over other options.

Stephen Horrey of EcoService (UK) Ltd explained, “For every 1kW used by EcoSink the material it processes can be used to generate up to 10kW of electricity. It is encouraging that a biomass plant built at Didcot next to the sewage works converts all solid sewage into electricity within two weeks.  We are campaigning for more biomass capability in the UK by lobbying our local MP and building relationships with green and environmental bodies.”
