Plumis Ltd. has launched Automist, an innovative fire protection system designed to integrate seamlessly into residential properties. Intended as a lower-cost alternative to sprinklers, Automist can even be retrofitted without major disruption. The device is intended for use in fire-prone locations like kitchens and kitchen/diners and has been shown by BRE to protect life in rooms of 8m by 4m. Automist’s high-pressure under-sink pump is triggered by a heat alarm, with water mist nozzles mounting discreetly under the existing mixer tap.
Automist was inspired by insight work at the Royal College of Art with London’s Fire and Rescue Services, which highlighted the lack of appropriate fire suppression products for residential use. Fire alarm and suppression products are traditionally seen as disruptive “industrial grade” solutions that cost thousands of pounds per dwelling, impose severe aesthetic constraints, and do not target the highest risk areas of the home. Plumis was founded to create targeted, elegant, but effective alternatives.
Automist provides whole-room fire suppression for the worst problem area, the kitchen, where 65% of fires start. The system is almost invisible once in place and can be installed in a few hours, requiring only mains water and electrical connection. The mist emitter head will match most chrome monobloc mixer taps as long as the tap base is round or oval and between 45mm and 60mm in diameter. Heads with brushed or coloured finishes can be made to order, and the company plans alternative shapes to match more eclectic luxury kitchen ranges. Variants are also available for free-standing use without a tap.
Automist is the first truly consumer-appropriate device that automatically tackles fires in the home.
During its launch period, the Automist standard kit is promotionally priced at £569 including VAT. Extensive information is available at Plumis’s website, www.plumis.co.uk, and the company can be reached through the website or on 020 8133 8775.
