Energos advanced conversion technology has been selected for the treatment of residual waste at the proposed Milton Keynes Waste Recovery Park by Milton Keynes Council and AmeyCespa, which is preferred bidder to design build and operate the overall waste treatment facility.
Milton Keynes' three stage waste treatment process will treat household waste, using mechanical treatment to sort recyclates, anaerobic digestion and gasification.
As the final stage in the process, Energos will convert any remaining, non-recyclable waste into a syngas for the production of high temperature steam that can then be converted into electricity in a turbine.
The Energos facility will have a capacity of over 90,000 tonnes and generate a gross output of 7MW of green electricity, sufficient to power approximately 11,000 homes.
UK-based Energos has a 15-year track record and more than 560,000 hours of operation at several gasification facilities across Europe, specialising in small-scale clean energy recovery from residual waste.
Nick Dawber, Managing Director of Energos, said: "Energos is pleased to be selected as a partner in the Milton Keynes Waste Recovery Park. We offer an environmentally responsible, community sized energy from waste solution that will ensure the diversion of biodegradable material from landfill. Our facilities generate renewable energy and displace the use of fossil fuel."
A planning application is expected to be made in 2013, following comprehensive consultation.
Energos has recently been selected as a technology provider for Glasgow City Council's proposed Recycling and Renewable Energy Centre.
