Colour, sleek aesthetics and environmental performance were the deciding factors that led to Andersen windows and doors from Black Millwork being specified for a sustainable construction project in Guildford, Surrey.
Converting a stable block into an eco-friendly family home, the developer was looking for high specification windows that would complement the other sustainable features of the property, which include a rainwater harvesting system, substantial insulation throughout the build and solar photovoltaic panels for renewable energy generation.
“The property is on a south-west facing slope that is fairly exposed to the elements, so the client wanted robust windows and doors that would retain maximum heat,” explains Bob Heller at Black Millwork. “Andersen’s reputation for durability and energy efficiency meant they were a natural choice for the project.”
Another key consideration was visual appeal. With a complex architectural design, including roller shutters on all the windows to ensure maximum thermal efficiency and cladding on all the external walls of the building, the windows and doors needed to reflect the property’s modern aesthetic. The external cladding and zinc roof were specified in a dark grey shade, so the windows and patio doors were installed in dove grey frames from the Andersen A-Series, to complement the building’s existing tones.
The extensive specification included five sets of four-panel patio doors, two awning windows and a large screen of glazed wall and gable. Two sets of French doors with additional side lights were also installed. Placed next to and above patio doors, sidelights can transform a doorway into an elegant wall of light. With a wide range of standard and bespoke shapes and sizes available, Andersen’s products helped to create a unique widow installation.
From energy efficiency and ease of maintenance to long-term durability, Andersen A-Series windows and doors are the highest-performing products Andersen makes. The Low-E4™ glass used as standard in the range is self-cleaning and highly energy efficient, helping to reduce energy bills and sound. The entire range is BBA approved for performance and meets all current Building Regulations.
The exceptional performance is matched by elegant styling, with a wide range of shapes, styles, colours, options and accessories - an important consideration in achieving the right look for the house. In this case, the windows and doors delivered the high-spec capabilities required by the developer, as well as the modern aesthetic he wished to create – all the while freeing him from the hassle of on-going maintenance further down the line.
