Cedar Court Grand Hotel & Spa added another prize to its burgeoning trophy cabinet last night with success in one of the most prestigious categories at Yorkshire’s White Rose Awards.
In front of an audience of 1,000, the privately-owned Grand took the award for Large Hotel of the Year, completing a remarkable 12 months in which it also received its formal 5-star certification from the AA and achieved Two AA Rosettes for The Grill Room at The Grand restaurant.
Maria Florou, General Manager of The Grand, said:
“We are so proud to win this award because we know what a tough category it is. The White Rose Awards are considered a real barometer of quality both in the tourism industry and for consumers, and Large Hotel of the Year is historically one of the hardest awards to win.”
She added:
“The team were ecstatic when our name was announced, and I’m just hugely grateful to them for the consistently hard work they have put in to providing every guest with a 5-star experience. It’s that effort and application that gave us our win last night.”
Commenting on why The Grand won the award, the judges said:
“It is sheer opulence, style and a sense of grandeur set in one of York’s finest buildings. It is fitting that a building so strongly associated with the City’s railway heritage should now be the location of such a fine hotel. Attentive, highly professional yet friendly staff ensure that visitors experience the very best in traditional English style.”
The White Rose Awards are run by tourism agency Welcome to Yorkshire and are the biggest tourism awards in the UK.
Guests from Yorkshire’s tourism sector – which is worth an estimated £7bn – attended the event alongside star guests including Olympic gold medal winners Nicola Adams, Andy Triggs-Hodge and Hannah Cockroft.
Cedar Court Grand Hotel & Spa, York is Yorkshire’s only - and York’s first ever - five star hotel. It has 107 bedrooms, including 13 suites and a lavish penthouse. Many of the rooms have views of the historic City Walls and, as a Grade II listed building, many of the original features remain in place.
Cedar Court Hotels is Yorkshire’s largest independent hotel collection. In addition to The Grand, it has four star hotels in Wakefield, Leeds/Bradford, Harrogate and Huddersfield/Halifax.
