Doorsets Add to North Glasgow College Safety Features

The new £20 million North Glasgow College campus, built on a brownfield site in the Springburn area, includes a fully-equipped games hall, music rooms and libraries. It marks a significant stage in the regeneration of north Glasgow and the development of one of Scotland's largest further education colleges.

The project, which has won an award from the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and was a RIBA 2009 award winner, includes over 400 doorsets from Leaderflush Shapland’s Extended Performance and Designer ranges to meet performance characteristics specifically for fire resistance (up to 60 minutes) and sound reduction (up to 44RwdB).

Leaderflush Shapland doorsets are designed as complete engineered units to meet specific performance requirements and are manufactured to exacting standards from established components. Fire resistant doorsets are third party certificated by the BWF-Certifire Scheme and are supplied with appropriate smoke seals and intumescents to suit performance.

EnduraCor, the engineered performance core exclusive to Leaderflush Shapland, was used in the door construction as its durability and stability make it especially suitable for education applications. In a recent independent test, EnduraCor was shown to be one hundred times more durable than multi-layered chipboard - this highly cost-effective solution could significantly reduce ‘whole life’ repair and maintenance costs. It can also help specifiers achieve a BREEAM rating as it is manufactured using sustainable materials in accordance with BRE.

Paul Stallan from architects RMJM commented, “The safety of students and staff is the most important aspect when designing any educational building, so of course we ensured that products of the highest standard were used in every aspect of the design and construction to guarantee the best protection against the effects of fire.”

Leaderflush Shapland, the UK’s leading performance doorset manufacturer, has extensive knowledge and experience within the education sector. Recent projects include Lornshill Academy in Clackmannanshire, the Roundhouse at Derby College and St Paul’s Academy in Greenwich.
