Marley Eternit’s market-leading Duo Edgemere interlocking slate has been specified for a mixture of semi-detached, terraced and detached properties at a major new housing development in Alford, Aberdeenshire.
The ‘Silver Birches’ development by Stewart Milne Homes, one of the largest housebuilders in the North of Scotland, comprises 224 properties and includes a range of luxury homes styled by leading interior designer, Marren Interiors.
With local planners requesting that a thinner style of slate tile be specified on the project so that the aesthetic appeal of the new homes would blend seamlessly with the surrounding urban landscape, architects at Stewart Milne worked with Marley Eternit’s team to find the most appropriate roofing solution.
Duo Edgemere slates in Smooth Grey were chosen as they met the requirements of the planners whilst supporting the design vision that Stewart Milne had set for the overall scheme.
Steve Donald from Stewart Milne comments: “After discussions with the local planning department, it was clear that they were seeking a thinner, smaller-sized slate tile style to sit neatly and comfortably alongside existing dwellings within the surrounding location.
“Helpfully, we were able to use samples provided by Marley Eternit during our discussions with the planners. Being capable of quickly and accurately demonstrating the proposed roofing solution helped ensure that planning consent was a straightforward exercise.”
Gavin White, campaign manager at Marley Eternit, adds: “The fact that Duo Edgemere slates have a thin leading edge and are designed to look like and blend in with small format slates made them the ideal choice to meet planning requirements for this development.
“The slates are light and use 25 per cent less raw material than a standard concrete tile. They also provide other practical and economic benefits such as requiring only 9.7 slates per square metre - compared to other products which may need as many as 11.1 slates for the same area.”
Marley Eternit’s Duo Edgemere slates provide a machine-made and consistently-sized cost effective alternative to natural slate which saves installation time as no sorting or grading is required on-site. The slates can also be installed at pitches as low as 17.5 degrees, providing contractors and specifiers with additional flexibility in terms of design and installation.
Duo Edgemere slates can also achieve an A+ rating as defined in the BRE’s ‘Green Guide to Specification’ making them an ideal product choice to support sustainability objectives for any project.
