Start on site for Essex school redevelopment

Work has started on the new Ilford Jewish Primary School in Forest Road Barkingside, Ilford, Essex. Part of the wider £11 million redevelopment of the King Solomon High School campus, the project was designed by RHWL Architects and the main contractor is HG Construction Ltd.

Jonathan Goldstein, Deputy Chief Executive, Heron International, said: "We greatly appreciate RHWL Architects design leadership over the recent challenging years in gaining the various consents and permissions to enable the community's aspiration for a new through-school campus at King Solomon High School which will provide the very best of modern educational facilities for our young people."

The new building will contain a crèche, a nursery and a 1 ½ form entry primary school together with out-of-hour community facilities, all grouped around safe, secure south-facing playgrounds and will provide education for up to 395 children aged 2-11 year olds.

The primary school is relocating to the 6.5 hectare (16 acre) King Solomon High School campus from its existing building in Carlton Drive, Barkingside, Ilford, Essex where it is proposed that the local authority will house another school in its former premises to meet growing national and local educational demands.

The wider campus plans propose a phased redevelopment masterplanned around the existing high school building and will also provide secondary students with a new arts, drama and music department, new Sixth Form facilities and reorganised landscaping and service/parking facilities.

Grant Wood, Principal Director of RHWL Architects, said: “As well as improving facilities for the high school students, the King Solomon campus masterplan brings Ilford Primary School onto the same site, providing new modern educational facilities, more efficient use of space, a sustainable environment and the opportunity to offer places from 2 to 18 years old through the same campus.”

The primary school is due to be completed in July 2013 and the whole development will be completed in summer next year for the commencement of the 2013/14 academic year.
