The practical and philosophical considerations of adapting traditional and listed buildings will come under the microscope at a forthcoming Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) conference, jointly sponsored by TRADA Technology Ltd.
The CIOB Adaptation conference takes place on November 8 and is geared towards building sector professionals who might be involved with the planning and/or development of existing traditional buildings, including building surveyors, architects, engineers and planning or conservation officers.
The conference has drawn together a list of highly regarded industry speakers, who will highlight practical examples through case studies, with a focus on the potential for incorporating sustainable measures.
For example, Dr John Williams, senior technical consultant at TRADA Technology, will be discussing strategies for using timber in adaptation projects, specifically identifying defects, remedial treatment and assessing strength in situ. Other speakers include the National Trust’s buildings advisor Roger Cayzer, Ed Morton, managing director of the Morton Partnership and John Edwards, assistant director of Cadw.
The conference takes place at Quarry Bank Mill in Manchester, one of Britain’s greatest industrial heritage estates, and the afternoon will include a tour of the site which will highlight many of the learning outcomes of the previous sessions. CPD certificates will be awarded at the end of the day.
