John Lewis presents first all-LED store with GE

The John Lewis Ipswich store is the Partnership’s first 100 percent LED store and the first to hit 10W/m2 for lighting.

Delivering ground-breaking energy savings, GE Lighting’s LEDs are significantly enhancing the retail experience for customers and creating a pleasant working environment for John Lewis staff.

The decision for John Lewis to move to energy efficient LED technology was motivated by its CSR goal to reduce energy consumption in its stores by 20 percent in 10 years but not without extensive research and the successful 18 month trial period.  John Lewis partnered with GE Lighting for the trial of LED technology and for the final installation at its new Ipswich store using GE’s Infusion modules.

John Lewis had very specific criteria for the lighting scheme. This included a colour temperature requirement of 3000K warm white combined with precise light control via a 15-degree narrow beam optical system. Furthermore, since LED technology continues to evolve, the new lighting scheme in the John Lewis store had to be easy to upgrade in the future.

To meet these requirements, John Lewis opted for luminaires supplied and adapted by Edge Lighting, incorporating GE Lighting’s Infusion LED modules. The LEDs were installed throughout the store including the shop floor, office spaces and warehouses.

“We opted for GE Lighting’s Infusion LED module because, not only did it meet all of John Lewis’ lighting criteria, it had a twist and lock capability, which I wanted to embrace,” Barry Ayling Lighting Design Manager at John Lewis explained. “This means we can re-lamp easily and just replace the LED engines for future energy saving and also if we need to change the beam angle or colour temperatures to suit the product.”

The twist-in GE Infusion LED module enables the entire LED engine to be removed and upgraded in seconds, ensuring the new lighting installation is completely future-proof.  An ideal solution for John Lewis, it means the team can simply choose to upgrade at a time when it is suitable to do so.

Along with the clear environmental benefits, the GE Infusion modules ensured that the retail experience for John Lewis’ customers was significantly improved. The LEDs deliver a bright, clear, white light that aids visual comfort and ensures colours are true to life.

“The shop staff, customers, procurement and CSR teams are all happy and aside from the performance of the LEDs – the clear, bright, white light has created great contrast and a lovely ambience within the store,” concluded Barry Ayling. “LEDs are working for us and after the success at Ipswich, we now only consider LED as the solution of choice for all new and refurbished John Lewis stores.”
