Knauf Insulation’s ThermoShell External Wall Insulation (EWI) has been used to treat 650 hard to treat homes on one of the largest Community Energy Saving Programme (CESP) schemes in the UK.
The project, led by fuel poverty organisation Community Energy Solutions (CES), has seen more than 1500 properties in Stockton and 1000 in Middlesbrough undergo a transformation that has made them more energy efficient and cheaper to heat.
The ThermoShell EWI system is a cost effective solid wall insulation solution, designed for the lifetime of a property. The system shields the existing exterior façade, whether brick, stonework, concrete or clay blockwork, from the effects of weathering – extending the longevity of the building but also providing the opportunity to enhance and upgrade the appearance of the building.
Additionally, the EWI system incorporates either a rock mineral wool or expanded polystyrene solution, for this project the EPS system was specified.
Karen Hindhaugh, Operations Director at CES commented on the ThermoShell EWI system: “This solution meant that the system could be installed quickly with minimum disruption to residents, with the addition of a silicone render ensuring the properties still looked the same as the other houses in the scheme.”
Gary Peacey, Contracting and Refurbishment Technical Manager, of Knauf Insulation said: “The ThermoShell EWI system can upgrade a property to current Building Regulations and beyond, drastically reducing carbon emissions and significantly lowering energy bills, making the system an ideal solution for this large scheme.
“With the products, used within the EWI system, being extremely easy to handle and install, it resulted in these two projects consisting of 2500 properties to be completed trouble-free and quickly. Ultimately providing a cost effective system, as well as undisturbed, happy residents who will notice a number of benefits from the installation.”
