Leicester College learners construct a successful academic year

Leicester College’s Construction Annual Awards Ceremony 2012 was proudly sponsored by Pochin Ltd this year, a 150-year-old Leicester-based plumbing and heating merchant.

Pochin, who already employ apprentices with their company sourced by Leicester College Apprentice Training Agency (ATA) also donated prizes and sponsored awards at the ceremony. The awards were presented to the learners at the ceremony by David Pochin, Manager Director of Pochin Ltd.

The evening opened with a welcome by the Principal of Leicester College, Maggie Galliers CBE followed by an address by Paul Hirscher, Curriculum Area Manager for Construction. Prizes and awards were given to the top learners in painting and decorating, built environment, plumbing, carpentry, joinery and brickwork, plastering and electrical installation.

The most prestigious prize of the evening, the £1,500 Plunket Award was awarded to 20-year-old, Raychell Palmer. Raychell has completed a range of courses with the College, including Carpentry and Joinery Diploma Level 1 and is currently studying Diploma Level 2 in Site Wood Trades.

Raychell said: “I was completely surprised and stunned to get the award! I will be working at the Olympics over the summer so need to concentrate on that first, but I would like to study Level 3 in Carpentry and Joinery, so I think I will put the prize money towards that in the future.”

David Pochin ended the presentation of awards with an address, in which he said: “As a former student of Leicester College – I know the value of what the College does and the people it helps to blossom in their chosen vocations. Congratulations to all the winners of these prestigious prizes – they have all shown great ability, a commitment to learning and work and we wish them every success in their careers.”
