Marley Eternit launches new and improved ‘pollution eating’ EcoLogic tile

Leading roofing and cladding manufacturer, Marley Eternit, has further enhanced its offering with the launch of a new and improved version of its innovative ‘pollution eating’ EcoLogic tile.

Previously available in the terracotta-brown ‘Bracken’, this launch sees the introduction of a new colour, ‘Nimbus Grey’, a rich grey blue colour. This gives a closer aesthetic match to natural slate, whilst a new formulation offers improved durability and sustained performance with a smoother textured surface finish.

After seeking customer feedback on EcoLogic, Marley Eternit decided to introduce ‘Nimbus Grey’ to enable these tiles to be used on a wider range of projects.

Andrew McKnight, head of research and development at Marley Eternit, explains: “Strict planning stipulations often determine product selection and we are confident that the introduction of this attractive new slate grey colour will result in an increased specification of Ecologic in areas where slate has been historically used.

“What’s more, with superior green credentials and improved durability, EcoLogic continues to represent an industry-leading product and is an obvious choice for specifiers.”

Its unique granule surface coating removes nitrogen oxides and other pollutants from the atmosphere which are responsible for acid rain and smog. For example, the tiles sold during the four years following the original Ecologic launch, removed the equivalent of 500,000 car miles worth of nitrogen oxides (NOx) from the air.

Andrew continues: “When this impressive analogy is combined with the fact that 50% of the tile’s material make up is recycled, it is clear to see why it is an ideal choice for architects or specifiers looking to enhance a project’s environmental and sustainability credentials.”

The external coating on EcoLogic tiles contains photocatalysts which speed up the naturally occurring nitrogen cycle. The coating reacts with asthma-causing nitrogen oxides in pollution to convert them to nitric acid, which is then neutralised to form calcium nitrate, a liquid fertiliser that is harmless to the environment (and, in fact, can even help to fertilise a garden).

Furthermore, based on Marley Eternit’s Ludlow Major concrete tile, EcoLogic can achieve an A+ rating in the Building Research Establishment’s Green Guide to Specification and is certifed with a ‘good rating’ under BES 6001, ‘Framework Standard for the Responsible Sourcing of Construction Products’, thereby making a significant contribution towards a project reaching the maximum number of credits available under the Code for Sustainable Homes and BREEAM.
