Edgemere interlocking slate is the perfect choice

Marley's Edgemere interlocking slate has been specified on a roofing refurbishment project in Colwyn Bay, designed to upgrade sheltered housing schemes for the local community.

Any refurbishment scheme has to be mindful of its locality and the improvements must work seamlessly with the surrounding built environment.

The specification team in Colwyn Bay ensured this was the case with the selection of Marley’s Edgemere interlocking slate in smooth grey. The choice not only replicates the predominant use of slate as the roofing material of choice in the area, but the colour also ensures consistency of appearance.

Luke Jones from G Purchase Construction Ltd, which undertook the project, said: “The refurbishment was required as the existing roofs were leaking and the fascia and soffits were in a bad state of disrepair. The work involved two locations in Old Colwyn and a number of sheltered flat blocks.

"The dimensions ranged between 166m2 and 440m2 and the main objective was to ensure the roofing upgrade matched the surrounding locality. The Edgemere slate has ensured this was achieved without question.”

Having worked with Marley’s products in the past, the contractors had already been impressed by the combination of product performance, availability and value for money, backed up with market leading support from the Technical Services team at Marley, which provides speedy advice and information for roofing projects.

It was a service which really benefited G Purchase Construction Ltd in Colwyn Bay, as Luke Jones explains: “In order to obtain assurance on the future performance of the roof, we asked Marley to carry out NBS surveys on site and provide us with a full system specification for the roofing materials to be used. They undertook this extremely quickly and got the information back to us without delay which was very helpful."

Familiarity with the Marley product range also assisted in delivering a highly successful outcome. Luke Jones continues: “We are well versed in the use of Marley products and have in the past accessed the support of the sample and technical advice service so we knew it was there if required. We are delighted with the overall aesthetic appeal of the refurbishment at Colwyn Bay and fully intend to use Marley’s products and services again in the future.”

The Edgemere interlocking slate range offers an alternative option to that of natural slate by providing a slate-like aesthetic, but with the affordability of a concrete interlocking tile. The Edgemere slate colour range allows house-builders and designers continued access to the precise appeal of a slate roof to help match local building styles, but with markedly reduced costs and far more flexible construction benefits such as speed of installation and greater coverage.

In addition, the Edgemere range offers excellent environmental credentials. Not only can it achieve an A+ rating in the BRE Green Guide, but recent accreditation to the BES 6001 framework standard for responsible sourcing means that using Edgemere can contribute extra credits under the Code for Sustainable Homes and BREEAM.

It can achieve up to an A+ rating in the Building Research Establishment’s Green Guide to Specification, thereby making a significant contribution towards reaching the Code for Sustainable Homes and BREEAM ratings. Furthermore, Marley recently became the only roofing manufacturer in the UK to achieve independent carbon footprint certification for its roofing products by Carbon Trust Certification.

Luke Jones concluded: “Edgemere’s clean and precise slate-like appearance enhanced by a thin leading edge was wholly appropriate to suit this location. The combination of colour options, performance characteristics and cost effectiveness – together with the all round service package on offer from the company - made Edgemere the perfect choice for this refurbishment project.”
