Metsä wood hits the roof

Despite market conditions Metsä Wood (formerly Finnforest) has continued to outstrip its peers, demonstrating significant investment in timber engineering developments that are supported by the right technology for the market. Finnroof is one of a raft of upgrades and improvements to Metsä Wood’s offer for housebuilders, developers, timber framers and specifiers being launched at EcoBuild.

Finnroof is a complete timber and roof cassette solution, pre-fabricated and fully insulated off- site. Finnroof is supplied as a site ready component according to the construction schedule. It arrives to site in a closed, pre-insulated panel format, complete with spaces for rooflights or dormer windows that are simply craned into place on the roof. In today’s safety conscious market, the system can be installed quickly and minimises working at height during construction. This is a system that is equally at home with masonry or timber frame structures and has all the advantages of quality assured factory manufactured elements.

The solution comprises on the outer-side of counter batten, breather paper, OSB timber panel, and Metsä Wood’s fully engineered Finnjoist complete with insulation. Once in position on the roof, tile battens can then be fixed in place, together with choice of roof tiles. Plasterboard can be applied with ease to the inside.

The overriding benefit of the FinnRoof system is its speed of installation and cost efficiency. Not only this but the system also enables sites to be designed in accordance with PPS3, by making optimum use of the space available to maximise living space.

Kevin Riley, Vice President UK Construction Industry for Metsä Wood explains what the implications of the system are for housebuilders: “By creating additional available and saleable space on a plot housebuilders stand to optimise sales by differentiating their offer, by making available an uninterrupted roof space which can be sold as habitable accommodation. A room in the roof is a popular method among housebuilders to achieving this.”
