Never mind the snow, there’s been a flurry of facial hair at HMG Paints’ head office site in Collyhurst, Manchester. Members of staff (male) have been growing moustaches throughout November in support of the Prostate Cancer Charity, under the banner of the Movember Challenge. More than twenty lads started off the moustache-growing marathon, although some gave in to itches and resumed shaving, but a gallant 15 persevered and are now hoping to raise at least £500, through donations to www.justgiving.com/HMGmovember.
A number of the HMG team are pictured above. Top row, left to right: Graham Miller (Colour Matcher from Moston), Neil Dawes (Foreman from Whitefield), Paul Newton (Technician, Moston), Mike Newton (Maintenance Manager, Moston), Nigel Sykes (Colour Technician, Salford), Glenn Reid (Lab Technician, Swinton) Steve Rawson (Sales Rep, Astley) Paul Booth (Sales Orders, Bolton). Bottom row: Nathan Rayner (Chargehand, Moston), Paddy Dyson (Marketing, Stockport), Russ Williams (Foreman, Moston), Steve Plunkett (Driver, Collyhurst), Paul Sheppard (Lab Manager, Stockport. As may be seen, one went for the Lemmy look, others opted for a Rufus Hound effect, while one chose Leigh Francis’ alter ego Keith Lemon as a model, all of them mustering a decent growth by the month end.
The original idea for the Movember Challenge came from the home of outrageous moustaches, Australia, and soon spread to the UK, US and the rest of the world. The men of Movember commit to growing a moustache for 30 days, starting clean shaven on 1st November, with the resulting moustaches becoming a visible symbol for men’s health.
Globally, Movember has raised £26 million for men-specific charities, channelling the money into a number of research and awareness initiatives. HMG’s Movember crew is supporting the UK’s leading voluntary organisation working with people affected by prostate cancer, a number of them having relatives who have experienced the disease.
A Times writer growing a moustache in support of the same challenge commented this week that ‘women love it’, reporting that they said his hairy upper lip looks ‘really sexy’. Whether this is the case for the moustachioed HMG guys is not known!
