Price & Myers will re-construct its eye-catching Hy-pavilion at Timber Expo in September, featuring Kerto engineered timber, to create the TRADA stand at the show. The demountable structure was designed for last year’s London Festival of Architecture (LFA) by Tim Lucas, Partner at Price & Myers.
The pavilion provided a 3600 stage for talks and events during the festival and was installed at two locations in central London. TRADA Membership & Marketing Manager Rupert Scott said, ‘This clever structure says so much about what is possible with timber today, which is exactly what Timber Expo and the integral In Touch with Timber conference intend to convey. It will - literally - provide the perfect platform for TRADA and the event as a whole to deliver their message to specifiers.’
The structure is made from lengths of black cord and Finnforest ‘Kerto’ engineered timber edge beams arranged in the shape of two intersecting hyperbolic paraboloids - the geometric form that lends its name to the pavilion. The paraboloids, at right angles to each other, create a stable frame of rigid triangles made of eight strong engineered timber beams.
The beams are linked together in the middle and at their tips like four pairs of scissors: the joints form a mechanism that raises the pavilion when the corners are pulled together. This means that the three-storey high structure can be put up without any need for cranes or scaffolding.
Timber Expo takes place at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry on 27th & 28th September 2011. For more information visit www.timber-expo.co.uk. To post comments and suggestions for future use of the Hy-pavilion email hypavilion@pricemyers.com
