The RIBA launched its first photography competition in May, Architecture 2012, open to all RIBA members.

The competition was looking for images that captured any interpretation of architecture in 2012 in all forms; the inspiring, the beautiful, the intriguing or even the bizarre!

Over 90 entries were received from as far as Hong Kong and were judged by a panel that included Morley von Sternberg, architectural and portrait photographer and Angela Brady, RIBA President.  Ten winning images have been selected, to be printed on cards and sold in the RIBA Bookshops and online.  All proceeds from the sale of the cards will go to the RIBA Education Fund, a registered charity that makes grants to students of architecture in the UK who are experiencing financial hardship.

The winning images and their authors, in alphabetical order, are:

  • 16thC Dovecote in Bruton, Somerset by Colin Powell
  • Hallgrímskirkja Church, Iceland by Paul Ashton
  • Hugo Boss, Barcelona by Rob Boltman
  • King's Cross Concourse, London by John Malaiperuman
  • Neues Museum, Berlin by Antonia Infanger
  • Science Museum, Barcelona by Jasmine Gokmen
  • The Atomium, Brussels by Fiona Vigar
  • The Shard, London by John Harding
  • The Tulip Staircase, Queen’s House, London by Mark Lakomcsik
  • The UK Pavilion, Shanghai World Expo 2010 by Jeremy Chun Yin Yu

The overall winner will be announced by Angela Brady at the RIBA Education Fund Raising Dinner on the 28 June 2012.

RIBA President Angela Brady said:

“A RIBA members’ photography card competition is something that Robert Elwall, Photographs Curator of the British Architectural Library, and I talked about doing to showcase great architecture.  This competition is a fitting tribute to Robert who sadly died earlier this year. I am sure he would have been pleased with the level of interest received and the results of the competition ‘Architecture 2012”.
