Architecture duo Jonathan Schwinge and Daniel Madeiros have won the RIBA-backed ideas competition to design a new ‘marker’ for Grimshaw’s Millennium Point complex in Birmingham
The duo saw off finalists BDP, De Matos Ryan, Brighton’s Quixotic Architecture, Birmingham-based K4 Architects and Make Architects to come up with a scheme ‘to draw attention to the under-played north side’ of the 11–year-old millennium project in the developing Eastside of the city centre.
The ‘young team’ of James Lew and Kieren Majhail from BDP and K4 Architects led by Bob Ghosh were both commended by the judging panel.
Philip Singleton, competition judge and chief executive of Millennium Point said: "The panel was struck by the beauty and grace of the winning idea which was underpinned by craft and technology that convinced us that the dramatic form could be constructed. We chose two further submissions and commended them for their approach and thoroughness."
Competition winner Madeiros said: "The proposal is a concise response to the competition brief and the site, our interest is a sculptural form which has precision and elegance – an object to soften and revitalise the local environment."
