Scale Lane Bridge wins Civic Trust award

The Civic Trust Awards 2014 has selected Hull's Scale Lane swing bridge as a National winner and will receive a Civic Trust Award, Commendation or Community recognition. The level of success will be announced on Friday March 7.

This follows on from winning the "Completed" category of the World Architecture News Transport Award 2013, last week.

The bridge connects Hull's historic Old Town attractions with those on the east bank, including The Deep and so far more than 1,000 people have done just that.

The design was praised in the Observer, which said it was a "destination in its own right".

Now, the Civic Trust Awards panel has chosen the bridge from 238 other architectural gems to be a regional finalist. A national panel will now meet to decide which of the finalists should receive a Civic Trust Award, Commendation or Community Recognition.

The final awards will be revealed at the 55th Annual Civic Trust Awards Ceremony held at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool on Friday March 7.

Councillor Martin Mancey, Portfolio Holder for Energy City, said: "To be named as a finalist for these prestigious awards is a great accolade and adds to last week's tremendous achievement. These awards recognise the very best architecture, planning and design; and highlights the wonderful vision of the designers."

Jacquie Boulton, Area Manager at the Homes and Communities Agency, said: "This Award recognises that the bridge is not simply an amazing architectural statement but will also make a positive impact on the city of Hull. The recognition for the bridge is thoroughly well deserved and will help promote the city in the build-up to the City of culture events in 2017."

McDowellBenedetti, the architects of the bridge, have made a video which shows the unique aspect of the bridge where people can enjoy walking on it- and hearing the soundscape of the art installation- while the bridge is actually swinging open.

The other regional finalists for Yorkshire and Humber are Algernon Firth in Leeds, Derwenthorpe Phase One in York, Franklin Entrance Building in North East Lincolnshire and West Officer, the headquarters for City of York Council.

Hull City Council operates the Scale Lane bridge twice-a-day every Saturday at 11am and 12.45pm and once-a-day at 12.45pm on a Sunday for residents and visitors to enjoy, in addition to the movement for river traffic.
