The thought of studying in idyllic surroundings on the shore of Lake Michigan is appealing.
But when Loyola University needed to combine its on-site libraries and IT services, it called on the services of Soloman Caldwell Architects and Securistyle, the well-established manufacturer of quality, innovative hardware for the window and door industries, to ensure that, as well as remaining in keeping with the University’s surroundings, the building was fit for purpose for this particular location.
Completed in 2008, Loyola University now houses a 69,000 square foot digital research centre on the shore of Lake Michigan. The combined facility, known as the Information Commons uses a number of natural and mechanical systems to provide a well-ventilated and sustainable environment for students. This includes Securistyle’s Parallel Plus hinge system.
The 21st century building offers not only the latest computer technology but a team of experts to go with it, supporting the needs of students and staff alike. Founded on the philosophy of the three C’s, collaboration, connectivity and community, the Information Commons is the result of the student population of Loyola University being the focal point of the building. The Information Commons was also designed to provide a flexible, open, empowering and comfortable environment for them.
The hinge system allows for optimum ventilation through an open window, ensuring a comfortable environment. It also restricts the opening to make the windows more secure and to prevent occupants from falling. The location provided another challenge for the building, as its proximity to Lake Michigan meant any externals had to have high corrosion resistance.
Like all heavy duty hinges from Securistyle, the Parallel Plus is produced from austenitic grade stainless steel for enhanced corrosion resistance, and is backed by a 12-year guarantee – a significant benefit to a building with such a unique location.
