Contemporary office accommodation constructed in South Yorkshire to mark the 150th anniversary of global firm James Durrans and Sons incorporates curtain walling systems from Senior Architectural Systems, ensuring views across a nearby valley are captured and that the interior of the building is flooded with natural light.
Costing more than £2.5 million to construct, the building, in Penistone, Sheffield, incorporates Senior’s SCW+ curtain walling systems across its primary south elevation and its east and west elevations, giving those inside the stunning building clear views down onto the River Don and its natural surroundings.
From the exterior, Senior’s high quality powder-coated curtain walling systems, used at full height to enhance the aesthetic properties of the structure, ensure the four-storey building, built by local contractor and developer JF Finnegan, is one of significance in Penistone.
Senior’s SPW600 doors systems were installed for use on feature balconies on the south elevation, while SD auto sliding doors were also installed along with SPW500 thermally broken commercial doors.
The SCW+ curtain walling systems, which were installed by Danum Windows on the site, are thermally enhanced, feature high-performance gaskets and can be fabricated into ladders for more efficient installation. The high quality systems ensure daylight is maximised inside James Durrans’ new HQ and that the building is highly insulated; a ‘good’ BREEAM assessment rating was achieved.
Family-owned James Durrans, which supplies carbon-based products to the world’s manufacturing industries, was founded in Penistone in 1863. HTC Architects specified a combination of traditional stone and modern fenestration systems, representing the firm’s rich local heritage as well as its contemporary, unique present.
The north elevation of the 11,200 square foot building mainly consists of Ashlar stone sourced from a nearby quarry, but also features Senior’s SPW300 top-hung window systems to provide balance, ensuring the firm’s brand new headquarters complement existing properties in the vicinity.
Senior’s SPW300 polyamide aluminium window systems are thermally broken and achieve good thermal U-values. The systems have a slim sightline, a wide variety of window styles and are available single or dual colour.
David Wainwright, architect at HTC Architects, said: “Senior’s SCW+ curtain walling system provided a high quality finish to the glazing elements of the building and helped to achieve the building’s contemporary design aspirations, ensuring delivery of a functional and aesthetically stunning building.”
