Tata Steel has supplied 1500m2 of Colorcoat Prisma® and Colorcoat HPS200 Ultra® pre-finished steel to be used in the construction of replacement roofs for two Anglian Water reservoirs required for the storage of drinking water.
The project is being delivered by engineering firm MWH, one of the partners in the @one Alliance. The Alliance is responsible for delivering more than 50 per cent of Anglian Water projects in the AMP5 scheme. Subcontractor Balsham (Buildings) Ltd. is carrying out the work, at an Anglian Water site in Lincolnshire.
“The old aluminium roof had been in use for 15 years and was beginning to corrode. This meant that there was a risk of rain water falling in to the reservoir and potentially contaminating the treated water. It was essential that the roof was replaced, to ensure that the reservoir remains a reliable source of safe, drinkable water, so any products specified in the refurbishment had to be fit for purpose”, explains Mark Hurworth, RMI Manager, Balsham (Buildings) Ltd.
The standard Colorcoat Prisma® colour range has been rigorously tested by the Water Quality Centre and conforms to the requirements of The Water Supply Regulations 1999 and BS 6920:2000.
Colorcoat Prisma® is the first steel product to have been independently certified in accordance with the Water Regulations Advisory Scheme (WRAS) as being suitable for use in contact with drinking water, as it does not adversely affect the quality of the wholesome (drinking) water making it suitable for use in water storage tanks.
Adam Ford, Technical Delivery Manager, MWH adds: “We were delighted when Colorcoat Prisma® was certified by WRAS. Not only does it adhere to the crucial requirement that the linings used in water storage tanks must prevent inner condensation and contamination of the water held within the reservoir, but we also directly benefit from the performance and durability reassurance associated with using steel.”
The roofs for both reservoirs are set only 600mm above ground level to enable maintenance access and as such, a robust and durable solution was required. Colorcoat HPS200 Ultra® pre-finished steel was specified for the outer roof sheets in Goosewing Grey. The external sheeting benefits from the associated Confidex® Guarantee that covers the cladding for 40 years, maintenance and inspection free.
The innovative roofing system, manufactured by Tata Steel’s Panels and Profiles division, uses Trisomet composite panels - insulated to 40mm thickness – thus reducing the amount of condensation. In addition, the system also conforms to the highest standards of air-tightness and thermal efficiency to ensure optimum performance.
The first reservoir refurbishment at Clay Hill has now been successfully delivered and has returned to normal operation. However, work on the second reservoir cannot start until the autumn, when the summer peak in demand has reduced significantly. Before work commences, the contractors must undertake a lengthy development process, during which time the reservoir will be closed, drained and surveyed.
