The Green House hotel in Bournemouth helped The Bourne Academy pupils learn how to become sustainable for Climate Week (12 – 18 March 2012).
On Tuesday March 14, the school suspended its usual timetable to focus on the theme of ‘Sustainability…building for future generations’. Pupils, aged between 11 and 16, were taught about the hotel’s green practices and the practicalities behind constructing and running an environmentally friendly building.
In workshops, the students demonstrated lessons learnt from the day by designing eco-friendly houses which were later judged by the Green House.
Olivia O’Sullivan, general manager at the Green House, said: “We were impressed with the high standard of design and attention to detail demonstrated by the students at The Bourne Academy. The winner, Kingswear House, managed to include many of the green practices we employ at the hotel.
“At the Green House, we are committed to being green and to helping our guests be as green as possible during their stay with us. It is great to see that sustainability is such a strong focus in schools today.”
Rachel Hayward, head of Human Understanding at The Bourne Academy explained: “We hope that through these Climate Week workshops our students will develop more sustainable behaviours and also make progress against The Bourne Academy’s ASPIRE competencies; ambition, self-confidence, physical literacy, independent thinking, reflectiveness and emotional literacy.”
