As growing numbers of public venues acknowledge the need for specialist disabled toileting-‘Changing places’ – provision, leading provider Total Hygiene is making a further, significant commitment to help ensure appropriate requirements are designed, specified and installed.
The company, manufacturer of the UK’s only ‘wash and dry’ toilet developed specifically for disabled people- the Clos-o-Mat- and leading supplier of disabled toileting solutions, has recruited a dedicated specifications manager for ‘Changing places’ toilets, Lynne Smith.
Lynne’s appointment reinforces Total Hygiene’s dedication to the cause, to provide toilets that are more ‘user-friendly’ for the hundreds of thousands of people who require the help of at least one carer, especially when ‘out and about’. Total Hygiene is already sole sponsor of the ‘Changing Places Changing Lives’ campaign which promotes the ‘Changing places’ facilities, and has produced bespoke support material including a CPD seminar and specification guide.
A ‘Changing places’ toilet is bigger than a conventional disabled (Document M compliant) facility, and includes supplementary equipment such as height adjustable changing table, height adjustable basin, hoist and peninsular toilet. Already ‘good practice’ under BS8300:2009 accessible building design applying to all new build and major refurbishment projects involving buildings to which numbers of the public have access, it is likely ‘Changing places’ facilities will become a legal requirement when Document M is revised in 2013. Already, almost 250 approved ‘Changing places’ toilets are installed across the UK, in venues including leisure centres, shopping centres, airports, libraries and colleges.
