Zero carbon hub wins reprieve

The industry and green interest group's have secured a funding deal for the Zero Carbon Hub for another year.

The deal paves the way for further work to find practical ways that will allow the industry to deliver low and zero carbon homes.

Housing minister Grant Shapps cut funding to the zero-carbon homes body last year in the round of sweeping spending cuts.

At the time, he challenged the industry to step up to the plate to make up the funding shortfall as it developed ways to deliver the 2016 zero homes target.

Home Builder Federation executive chairman Stewart Baseley, in his role as joint chair of the Zero Carbon Task Force, has just completed a review of the Hub's work.

It involved speaking to representatives from all interested parties including Government, local authorities, house builders, energy providers and construction products manufacturers.

The review discovered overwhelming support for the Hub and clear vindication for its continued funding.

Baseley said: "I am delighted the Hub has been able to secure future funding and fully support the work it is doing.

"The review I have just completed clearly demonstrates its effectiveness. It has achieved a great deal in the short time it has been established.

But he added that much still needed to be done.

"The Hub must now take the lead and pull all parties together such that we can progress towards a realistic, practical and affordable implementation of this challenging objective - one that doesn't detract from housing delivery."

Mike Leonard, Director, Modern Masonry Alliance commented, "Given that the Government regards Climate Change as so critical it is disappointing to hear they have no money to support the good work of the Hub.

"Once again it falls upon an industry that is suffering badly to support and fund this important work which was evidenced at the excellent ZCH inaugural annual conference.

"We are delighted that the money has somehow been found and the MMA looks forward to playing a key role in the quest for viable tried and tested solutions that can stand the test of time."
