Residents at a sheltered housing scheme near Gateshead will soon be able to enjoy living in a contemporary new home, as part of a £2.2million refurbishment programme led by Two Castles Housing Association and Esh Property Services.
After successfully upgrading facilities at its nearby Castle Close sheltered housing scheme, work is now underway to transform Two Castles’ Tindale Drive scheme in Whickham for residents who are aged 60 years and over.
Designed and re-developed in partnership with Esh Property Services, a mixture of 25 modern one and two bedroom flats will replace existing homes onsite. A number of improvements to update the scheme’s layout and accessibility will also take place.
David Armstrong, housing services director at Two Castles Housing Association, said: “We’re delighted that refurbishment work is underway at Tindale Drive. The work follows the successful transformation of our facilities on offer to residents at Castle Close and will see the existing building modernised greatly.
“Once complete, Tindale Drive will provide more spacious accommodation and improved accessibility for residents. The contemporary self-contained flats will also incorporate lots of tailored design features chosen by the residents themselves.
“We would like to thank all of the Tindale Drive residents and their families for their support during the construction process. We look forward to seeing residents return to their new homes following the scheme’s completion. We would also like to thank Gateshead Council, who provided temporary accommodation for residents during the refurbishment.”
Each self-contained flat will include a modern fully-fitted kitchen as well as contemporary bathroom facilities specially designed to cater for each resident’s independent living needs.
The energy-efficient scheme will also see the installation of photovoltaic panels on the roof of the building to provide energy for communal areas. Upgrades to the lounge and external sundeck areas as well as the installation of a new platform lift and improved wheelchair access will also take place.
Graham Morgan, operations director at Esh Property Services, said: “Residents were closely involved in helping Esh Property Services, together with HMH Architects, develop the designs for the project. It was a really effective collaboration which led to the design of really great new living space which is ideal for residents’ needs and all within the budget.
“We are delighted with the result and wish the residents all the very best as they move into their transformed homes.”
The refurbishment of both Castle Close and Tindale Drive will also include the development of five new two bedroom bungalows on a piece of under-used land onsite. This will be part funded by the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) and once complete, the energy-efficient homes will be made available to rent.
