The Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) and Leeds City Council (LCC) have announced that they are working together to secure the future development of the Tower Works site on the edge of Holbeck Urban Village.
The site, with its historic Italianate towers, had been derelict for 30 years until the first phase was completed in 2012 and the partners are now seeking to enhance the northern end of Holbeck Urban Village with a mixed use development.
The scheme is linked to Granary Wharf by a newly built canal-side footpath and has the potential for a range of uses including new homes, leisure facilities and office space.
The HCA and LCC have now launched the competition to secure new development at the site, and first stage bids can now be made.
Katherine Langley, Area Manager at the HCA said: “The proposed development at Tower Works will build on the success of the offices that were opened in 2012 and are now fully let, and will now ensure that the rest of the site is brought back into use.”
Councillor Richard Lewis executive member for development and the economy at Leeds City Council added: “Tower Works is truly an iconic site. It played a pivotal role in the industrial heritage of the city and can be pivotal again in the regeneration of the South Bank. With fantastic connectivity and its proximity to the city centre, it will be a catalyst for Holbeck Urban Village, whilst retaining an important aspect of the city’s history.”
It is expected that the successful developers for the 1ha site will be announced at the end of 2014.
