ASSA ABLOY, the global leader in door opening solutions, has featured in the NHS Alliance’s annual current affairs and news-style programme, looking at its building flow and access expertise, as well as its sophisticated key management systems.

In partnership with ITN Productions and the NHS Alliance, ASSA ABLOY took part in the programme, which was hosted by national newsreader Natasha Kaplinsky. ‘Communities of Care’ is a three part series, looking at how the NHS is meeting the challenge of tightened budgets, rising costs and stretched resources.

The programme, which features ASSA, ABLOY UK Specification and product solutions from ABLOY and Traka explores how access and flow around a healthcare building can be effectively managed and implemented to improve efficiencies for staff and safety for patients.

The ASSA ABLOY programme focuses on how well specified doorsets and innovative digital technology can improve the day-to-day use and traffic flow of a healthcare building, as well as enhancing patient security and easing administrative burdens. To demonstrate this capability, the programme features projects from the group’s healthcare portfolio, including Scunthorpe Hospital, The Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham and the new Birmingham Dental Hospital.

Speaking about the involvement with the NHS Alliance, ABLOY, Managing Director, Aaron Yule, said: “The NHS Alliance is a highly regarded engine for change and is continually looking to work with organisations who are invested in the progression and innovation of healthcare solutions. As a company we have spent a lot of time with healthcare professionals and understand how trackable keys and instant invalidation for lost or stolen keys not only improve efficiencies and reduce the burden on administration, but also how they can contribute toward improved patient care particularly with regard to the efficient distribution of controlled drugs in every hospital ward.

“This video was an opportunity to showcase the results of our systems and demonstrate how digital technology can enhance the quality of patient care and increase efficiencies within healthcare facilities."

David Wigglesworth, Managing Director for ASSA ABLOY UK Specification, added: “In addition to our product and technology capability, the Specification team is able to work closely with Capital Project teams to deliver doorset specifications that enable the optimum flow and controlled access around a building.

“As the video and the Communities of Care programme highlights, hospitals are under increasing pressure to deliver buildings that not only provide the right level of security but also meet government efficiency targets. By creating and using our specifications, which are aligned to meet BIM level 2 requirements, we’re able to provide data that can support and inform whole life costing and sustainability targets.”
