A light-filled, modern family space has been created in a recently completed extension at a family home through the installation of two sets of Origin Bi-fold Doors.
The family moved into their home in 2005, and since 2010 began planning the first of two extensions, with the intention of unleashing the potential of the house and creating a relaxed living space for the whole family to enjoy.
The couple had a pretty clear idea of what they wanted, but visited a few home exhibitions for additional inspiration. This is where they met Origin, a leading UK manufacturer of aluminium bi-folding doors, and were impressed with the engineering prowess and durability of the door systems, the bespoke design, ‘finger safe’ gaskets and the security features of the doors – which all proved to be the perfect recipe for the family home.
“The security of the doors was paramount for us as a family,” says David. “We had specific requirements in mind to ensure optimum protection and privacy for our child. We didn’t want external handles on the doors and requested that the same key was used to open all doors for convenience, and due to the bespoke nature of the Origin door, all these non-conventional features were catered for, without fuss.”
After planning consent was obtained with the local authorities, the work on the first extension got underway. Included in this 12sqm conservatory extension was two sets of Origin Bi-fold Doors, each with four doors.
Incorporating the two sets of folding sliding doors into the room design meant that the entire opening could be revealed, creating a seamless connection between house and garden. The two sets of doors fit into apertures of 3397mm and 3435mm, with each door leaf measuring 805mm and 796mm wide respectively by a standard height of approximately 1996mm.
The aluminium doors are powdercoated in hipca white to maintain a modern fresh look in keeping with the painted white walls. The high grade powdercoated finish of the doors removes the need for periodic painting and maintenance. The hard wearing finish protects against scratches and colour fading, minimising the upkeep of the doors.
The installation of the doors and extension was completed in June 2013, and ever since the bi-fold doors have been the focal point of the room. “What I love about the doors is that you are essentially able to take down the walls and merge your outdoors with your interior. It is lovely being that close to the outside, which is quite special being in a town,” concludes David.
The second extension is expected to start in August 2015; the family plan to extend the house, incorporating additional bifolds, by removing the gable end and taking down the garage, this project is expected to be a four-six month build.
